Using an air compressor to operate any air-powered nailer, stapler, or other pneumatic tool is common knowledge, but many don't realize it's not simply the air compressor that brings their pneumatic tool(s) to life. Get the most out of any air tool with these top five essential air compressor accessories.

1. Air Hose

Available in 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch inside diameters, the air hose is not only our most common accessory on this list - but also the most crucial. RolAir recommends using a 3/8 inch air hose whenever possible, as it allows for optimal air flow - despite being slightly less nimble versus a comparable 1/4 inch air hose.

Air hoses come in a variety of lengths and materials. Typically found in 25 foot increments, make sure your air hose is long enough to reach the distance required. For a workshop or garage, 50 feet may suffice - whereas a roofer or framer may require 100+ feet of air hose while on the job.

When it comes to selecting the best air hose material, it really depends on the type of environment the hose will be used. Options for air hoses include rubber,  polyurethane, or a rubber and polyurethane blend (commonly referred to as a "Hybrid Hose"). Rubber material handles temperature change well, but for more intense use, contractors generally prefer polyurethane air hoses, which also do well in extreme temperatures (warm and cold), but offer added flexibility with less risk of damage. Polyurethane has been found to stand up better to cuts and kinks too. Hybrid air hoses offer added durability, but at a more desirable price point as compared to traditional polyurethane air hoses.

2. Oils & Lubricants

Most new air compressors that are not oil-free come with a fresh reservoir of oil, but once that oil has reached the extent of its lifespan, you'll need to make sure the compressor pump is properly lubricated.

Before you start, make sure your compressor is not an oil-free model. Assuming it requires oil, prior to daily operation, make a habit of checking the air compressor's oil level for the compressor pump and engine (if compressor is gas-powered). Every direct-drive, hand-carry air compressor has a dipstick to check and maintain the proper oil level. RolAir belt-driven air compressors are equipped with a sight gauge to make the task of checking oil levels easier. Always maintain the oil level to read 2/3 full on the sight gauge.

As a general rule, RolAir recommends changing air compressor oil once a month - though depending on usage this interval may change. If measuring based on hours, 10WT and 30WT compressor oil should be changed every 200-400 hours, while semi-synthetic air compressor oil can go 1,000 to 2,000 hours, and full synthetic compressor oil can run 2,000 to 4,000 hours between changing. Always use oil specified for use with air compressors, ONLY.

3. Air Hose Fittings

Thanks to their size, air hose fittings are probably the easiest air compressor accessory to forget; but while the fittings may be small, their purpose is significant. Depending on your set-up, you'll be able to choose between connectors, couplers, elbows, manifolds, splicers and more. Most of the fittings on Nail Gun Depot are anodized, which means they are resistant to rust and corrosion. Simply learn the proper size fitting for your air tool configuration before shopping.

4. Air Regulators, Filters & Lubricators

The following three air compressor accessories aren't necessarily mandatory, but can improve operation in many ways. Air regulators are pretty straightforward in their purpose - to regulate air flow. Filters help to keep the compressor motor running more efficiently, by removing unwanted moisture and debris from compressed air; however, if filters are allowed to get clogged, they actually lead to adverse results - reducing the compressor's lifespan and performance. The lubricator helps to ensure a long, trouble free service life, lubricating the entire compressed air system and eliminating the need to add oil to each tool individually, in some instances.

5. Air Compressor Expansion Tank

Need more air than your air compressor's built-in storage tank can hold? You'll probably need to invest in an air expansion tank for your compressor. Compressor expansion tanks are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, and are designed to hold a surplus of air - providing added pressure and performance between your compressor and pneumatic tool(s). Try to find an air reserve tank that is certified by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), ensuring compliance with the laws and regulations of the United States.

Dewalt is yet again raising the bar in cordless fastening, expanding their already impressive line of 20V MAX cordless nailers and staplers. Like most Dewalt cordless models, customers have a choice between the bare-bones tool, or a full kit with battery, charger and storage bag included. No doubt, Dewalt's new cordless nailers and staplers are certain to shake things up, as they become available for delivery throughout Summer 2017.

For the floor installer, Dewalt introduces the world’s first battery-powered floor stapler, the DCN682M1. This cordless flooring stapler kit is designed for engineered wood flooring. The DCN682M1 has a built-in paddle trigger, allowing for easy use in multiple orientations. For finish and trim woodworking, the DCN680D1 18 gauge cordless brad nailer kit may be the ticket. When paired with a Dewalt 2.0Ah 20V lithium ion battery, the Dewalt DCN680D1 can shoot up to 1200 nails between charging cycles. The full kit includes a DCB203 battery pack, DCB112 charger and kit bag. Designed with a micro nose, the Dewalt DCN680D1 provides improved line of sight and nail placement accuracy, as compared to the outgoing Dewalt DC608 brad nailer. Other features on the DCN680D1 include tool-free depth adjustment, tool-free jam release, selectable trigger, low nail lockout to prevent dry firing, and multi-functional LED lights. Consider the Dewalt DCN680D1 for fastening decorative molding, cabinetry, furniture, crown molding and flooring underlayment.

Don't need the full kit? Consider the DCN680B bare tool. Both models should be available Early Summer 2017.

Need to install large kitchen crown molding? No problem for the Dewalt DCN650D1 15 gauge cordless angled finish nailer kit. With a Dewalt 2.0Ah lithium ion battery, the DCN650D1 can fire up to 800 nails per charge. This DA angled finish nailer kit comes complete with a DCB203 battery pack, DCB112 charger and kit bag. Featuring an inline magazine for easy use in multiple orientations and tight spaces, other features on the DCN650D1 include a tool-free depth adjustment for precise countersinking of nails, tool-free stall release lever, and multi-functional LED lights - to provide additional work space illumination. This cordless finish gun is excellent for crown molding, baseboards, door and window casings, and hardwood floor installation.

As with the two previous models, if you just want the tool, Dewalt also offers the bare DCN650B as well. Look for a Mid-Summer official launch date from Dewalt, on both DCN650 nailers.

Similar to the DCN682, Dewalt will also offer the DCN681D1, an 18 gauge cordless finish stapler kit. Almost identical to the DCN682, the Dewalt DCN681D1 narrow crown finish stapler runs the same L-Series staples, but eliminates the flooring shoe. The DCN681D1 kit includes a DCB203 20V lithium ion battery, DCB112 charger and kit bag; and is capable of driving up to 1000 staples per battery charge with 2.0Ah battery. The Dewalt DCN681D1 features an integrated tool-free stall release lever, allowing the user to reset its driver blade in case stalling occurs. This Dewalt cordless finish stapler comes with multi-functional LED lights for work space illumination, and low nail lockout to prevent dry firing - and damage to the wood surface. Other features of the DCN681D1 include a tool-free selectable trigger, adjustable belt hook, tool-free depth adjustment, and bottom load magazine for quick removal of jammed fasteners. The Dewalt DCN681D1 is perfect for cabinetry, furniture, paneling and underlayment. For the bare tool, Dewalt has the DCN681B, both models available starting Mid-Summer 2017.

Why use galvanized nails? The quick answer, to slow down the process of rusting and corrosion, by protecting the nail with a zinc coating. Galvanized steel nails will eventually rust (use stainless steel nails to completely prevent rust), but the galvanization (zinc coat) will prolong the nail's lifespan - as compared to non-coated alternatives. Because the cost of stainless steel is often two or three times that of galvanized steel, many contractors elect for the galvanized product in regions where building code doesn't specify otherwise.

So, you've decided to use a galvanized nail, but now need to determine which type of galvanized coating to use.

There are two main types of galvanized nail that you'll find on Nail Gun Depot, either Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG), or Electro-Galvanized (EG). Other types of galvanization can include tumbler hot galvanizing and mechanical zinc plating (also known as peen-plating). You may also see certain galvanized products listed as 1000 hours galvanized, which indicates those items are rated to withstand 1000 hours - or more - of salt spray testing.

Hot Dipped Galvanized nails are the highest quality of galvanization available, offering 1.7 mils minimum zinc coating thickness, evenly covering all nail surfaces from head to tip - and offering a 30-50+ year lifespan. The process for hot-dip galvanizing includes cleaning the steel body, submerging the nail into molten zinc, and spinning it to remove excess coating. Perfect for use indoor and outdoor, HDG nails provide a good balance of cost and quality. And, an added benefit, the coarse zinc particles offer added "cling" to whatever surface they come in contact with - providing additional holding strength.

For the highest quality galvanized nail, look to see if it is ACQ approved, which indicates the nail can be used with ACQ pressure treated lumber. For HDG nails, ensure the nail meets ASTM A153 specifications for hot dipped galvanizing.

For applications where lower quality galvanization is suitable, Electro-Galvanized nails are among the thinnest coating, at 0.36 mils maximum. Ideal for indoor applications, the EG coating has an average lifespan of 5-10+ years depending on the environment. Similar to HDG, Electro-Galvanized nails are also bathed in zinc, but with an electric current that charges the zinc acid and attaches it to the nail's body.

Despite the benefits to using a galvanized nail, there are certain types of wood, such as cedar or redwood, where galvanized nails (especially those with a lower quality galvanization) will quickly rust and streak the surface, due to a chemical reaction with the wood. We typically recommend using stainless steel nails if working with these types of wood, for a guaranteed high-quality finish.

When ordering, if you're looking specifically for Hot Dipped Galvanized nails, pay close attention to the product description. More often than not, if a nail is labelled as galvanized, but does not specifically indicate Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG) anywhere, the nail is probably coated with a lesser quality galvanization, such as Electro-Galvanized (EG).

Most nails offered through Nail Gun Depot are listed specifically by the type of material, coating, or galvanization they are manufactured with. When you think Grex Power Tools, your first thought is probably a 23 gauge micro pinner - or even an 18 gauge brad nailer. Grex wants to change your thinking, as the brand recently introduced its all-new H850LX 21 gauge micro brad nailer, the first of its kind to wear a green Grex badge.

At first glance, you can hardly tell the difference between the H850LX and its 23 gauge cousin, the P650LX. A closer look at the Grex 21 gauge pin nailer however, reveals a much different story.

Drawing on more than 16 years' engineering excellence, the Grex H850LX offers a perfect compromise between nail diameter (represented by visual penetration marks on the wood surface), and holding strength (represented by pin length and width). While 18 gauge brad nails offer improved holding power, they tend to leave larger holes and markings wherever the nail is applied. On the other hand, a 23 gauge pin leaves a smaller blemish on the wood surface, but compensates with a smaller nail diameter - which reduces holding strength.

This leaves you with 21 gauge pins (also referred to as micro brads), which sit right in the middle. Micro brads provide better holding power than 23 gauge micro pins, but leave a less noticeable mark after each drive, as compared to 18 gauge brad nails. Compare the Grex H850LX to other popular 21 gauge nailers, including the Everwin PT850EA, the Senco FinishPro 21LXP and the Cadex V2/21.55.

When it comes to features, the Grex H850LX will not disappoint. Standard features on the H850LX include internal aluminum parts, one-piece driver design with tapered tip (for minimal marking), auto trigger lockout, one-touch lock-out over-ride, on-board integrated edge guide with holder, extruded aluminum magazine, narrow nose design, removable no-mar rubber tip, Posit-Lock nose cover (to reduce jamming), steel belt hook, rear exhaust, large fastener indicator window, allen key storage, swivel air coupler, and rubber hand grip. Weighing in at 3.6 lbs., the H850LX is capable of driving 3/8" to 2" 21 gauge slight headed micro brads, such as Senco ZX Series pins. Versatile and efficient, first impressions indicate Grex has hit one out of the park with their H850LX.

Priced at the top of its competition, just under $300 at launch, it's too soon to tell if the additional expense will be justified in improved build quality, durability and features. But, based on our experience with Grex 23 gauge nailers, we're confident this tool will be successful among the woodworking crowd.

Replacing the expiring generation of NV83 and NR83 framing tools, new Hitachi A5 nailers feature first generation mechanics, including Hitachi's industry-leading cylinder valve drive system of the 1980's. Don't judge a tool by its cover, these Hitachi framing nailers are built for heavy construction from the inside out. Just take a look.

All A5 nailers share many of the same features and benefits, including a five-year professional warranty through Hitachi - to guarantee peace of mind, and promote minimal downtime on the job site. Each A5 framing nailer also comes with a 1/4" air inlet, while sharing the same cylinder valve drive system that put Hitachi framing guns on the map in the 1980's.

Keep reading to take a closer look at each tool.

We start with the Hitachi NV83A5, Hitachi's latest take on the coil framing nailer. Bringing forth a strong sense of nostalgia, the NV83A5 shares many of the same aesthetics and components made popular by the original Hitachi NV83A. Capable of driving 2" to 3-1/4" full head wire collated coil nails, the NV83A5 features a tool-free depth of drive adjustment, selective actuation trigger for bump or sequential fire, rapid response cylinder valve drive system, side load pop-out magazine, open nose design, plastic shield, rubber grip, and rafter hook. A hardened claw tip resists wear, and grips more for driving nails at different angles.

New and improved features for the NV83A5 include an easier to maintain design, interchangeable parts with the original NV83 tool, less parts in the trigger (eliminating composite parts altogether), and the addition of a rafter hook. Relying on the same cylinder valve drive system as the original NV83A, the NV83A5 offers both rapid response - paired with serious power. Light enough to hold in one hand during use, this Hitachi coil nailer is excellent for a variety of high production tasks in framing, sheathing, decking, sub-flooring and pallet assembly. The NV83A5 is a direct replacement for the NV83A4 and its predecessors.

On the other hand, the Hitachi NR83AA5 drives clipped head paper tape nails from 2" to 3-1/4" in length, and offset round head paper strip nails from 2" to 3-1/4" in length. Despite the difference in nail collation, many of the NR83AA5's underpinnings are shared between the other A5 framing nailers. Lightweight and well-balanced, this Hitachi framing nailer is not only easy to maneuver, but capable of driving into the toughest materials. The NR83AA5 shares Hitachi's cylinder valve drive system, offering rapid response firing - paired with sufficient driving power for quick and consistent sinking. Standard features on the NR83AA5 include a selective action trigger, to switch between contact and sequential operation, as well as a rear loading aluminum magazine, open nose design, hardened claw tip (to reduce wear and drive nails at different angles), rafter hook, tool-free depth adjustment, and a comfortable rubber grip.

With selective actuation now located on the trigger, just as with the NV83A5, Hitachi not only reduced the total number of parts in the trigger, but also eliminated all composite parts. The Hitachi NR83AA5 is intended for applications ranging from framing to sheathing, truss building, sub-flooring, decking, fencing, pallet building and more. The Hitachi NR83AA5 replaces all previous generation NR83AA tools, including the NR83AA3 and NR83AA4.

And last, but certainly not least, we have the NR83A5 and NR83A5(S).

Taking the refreshed NR83A5 plastic strip framing nailer back to its roots, Hitachi re-employed first generation components and mechanics. The NR83A5 round head framing nailer drives plastic collated strip nails from 2" to 3-1/4" in length, and also features selective actuation on its trigger. With a selective action trigger to easily switch between contact and sequential operation, the Hitachi NR83A5 also comes with a two-piece steel magazine, tool-free adjustable depth of drive, comfort rubber grip, hardened claw tip (for driving nails at different angles), and an open nose design for easy jam removal. Featuring a top load magazine, the NR83A5 also comes with a rafter hook and safety glasses; and is positioned as a direct replacement for the NR83A, NR83A2, and NR83A3.

Almost identical to the NR83A5, the Hitachi NR83A5(S) offers all of the same features (as the NR83A5), with the exception of depth adjustment. That's right, the NR83A5(S) does not come with adjustable depth, but is otherwise identical to its counterpart, the NR83A5.

Our take, if you don't need depth of drive adjustment, we'd suggest saving a few bucks and considering the A5(S).

All four nailers are expected to launch early September 2017, and should be readily available to ship within the month.

This leaves us with one last question. Which one would you choose?

Light-years ahead of the old Impulse tools from the 1990's, cordless nailing is now one of the hottest topics in construction. Efficiency concern - and in some cases questionable reliability - has kept many contractors from making the switch from air-power to battery-power, until now. Advancements in battery capacity and lithium ion technology, paired with better overall performance and durability, can be credited for the growing demand of cordless tools. With at least three leading brands ready to compete, and several others closing in on the competition, who's top dog when it comes to cordless framing guns?

And, while the same can be said about comparable contenders from Paslode and Dewalt, Hitachi's lithium ion system also eliminates the use of gas fuel cartridges - a benefit not currently available with Paslode cordless nailers.

Built from the underpinnings of Hitachi's high-quality pneumatic nail guns, the Hitachi 18V framing nailer is designed to handle like an air nailer, yet capable of delivering more than enough power to flush drive 3-1/2" framing nails with ease. This, in part, is thanks to Hitachi’s Air Spring Drive System, which uses permanently sealed compressed air to drive each nail - resulting in zero ramp up time, and driving speeds up to 2 nails per second. The list of standard features on each Hitachi NR1890 cordless framing nailer includes a tool-free depth of drive adjustment, selective actuation button, on-tool battery indicator, integrated pivoting rafter hook, and a side lock switch to prevent accidental firing.

Powered by Hitachi's BSL1830C compact 3.0Ah battery, these cordless framing nailers can drive up to 400 nails per charge. Each NR1890 nailer comes with a lifetime manufacturer's warranty on the tool itself, as well as Hitachi's 2-year battery guarantee, and 1-year warranty on the charger. In addition to the tool, you'll find a BSL1830C Li-Ion battery (339782), UC18YFSL fast charger, contractor bag and safety glasses in the box.

So, how does the Hitachi NR1890 really stack up against its competition?

For the sake of fairness, we can't really compare the NR1890DR to Paslode or Dewalt, since neither brand offers a cordless plastic strip framing nailer currently.

However, when it comes to paper tape nailers, the Hitachi NR1890DC can definitely hold its own against the Paslode CF325XP (905600), and the Dewalt DCN692M1. Hitachi's instant advantage over Paslode, the NR1890DC requires no compressed gas fuel for operation - meaning the end user can operate independently of costly fuel cells; and without the need for compressed gas, there's no delay in firing due to ramp up. A huge benefit for productivity and efficiency.

When we tested the Hitachi, we immediately noticed two things: the nailer is extremely fast - even compared to the Dewalt DCN692 - but can feel a little cumbersome after an extended period of time.

The biggest disadvantage to the Hitachi is its weight, which weighing in at 10 pounds with battery, is a pound heavier than the Dewalt DCN692, and three pounds heavier than the Paslode CF325XP. While a slightly heavier tool may pose issue to some, we're confident improved productivity and efficiency will more than make up for weight related concerns in the big scheme of things.

A micro nose frees the user’s line of sight, ensuring precision nailing with every drive. Meanwhile, an inline magazine, set at 25 degrees, allows the user to get into tight spaces; all while the BCN650’s brushless motor keeps the tool running smooth. Quickly switching between bump and sequential firing modes is no hassle either. For woodworkers and construction contractors, the level should be a constant companion while on the job. The integrity of a project hinges on the correctness of your level, yet most have no idea how to properly maintain their level for accuracy. Avoid warranty breaches, and most of all, the early retirement of your measuring companion; test yourself by comparing our tips for spirit level care:

How do I test the accuracy of my level?

The level-making experts at Stabila have your answer. Although it’s common practice, they don’t recommend testing a level’s accuracy by stacking one on top of another. To properly test the accuracy on any spirit level (aka the carpenter’s level), they advise following these easy steps, found at the bottom of their warranty page.

To check horizontal accuracy:

1. Place the level on a horizontal surface; make a mark on the surface at one end of the level.
2. Take a bubble reading and remember where it is.
3. Turn the level 180 degrees and place the other end of level at the mark you made earlier.
4. Read the level.
5. If the bubble returns to the same place, the level is accurate; if not, it is not accurate.
6. Repeat again to validate.

To check vertical (or plumb) accuracy:

1. Place the level vertically against a wall; make a mark at one end of the level on the wall.
2. Repeat steps 2 – 6 above, but keep the level vertical instead of horizontal.

What would cause my level to fall out of warranty?

Again, using Stabila as a reference, they explain that damage caused by the user is not covered under their specific warranty. For example, if the vials are melted due to excessive heat (when used near welding areas or similar), or if the frame becomes bent or damaged through use, you will most likely void the warranty.

It’s also important to note that when a level’s frame becomes bent, or is no longer perfectly straight, accuracy will be skewed – even if the damage is minimal.

How do I properly care for my level, to get the most out of it?

Stabila’s spirit levels are coated with an electrostatic enamel finish, which means that water and a brush are all that’s needed for cleaning. A reinforced aluminum body, as seen in the 48” Stabila 38648 Type 96M Magnetic Level, is resistant to rusting. However, it is good practice to always store these levels in a secure, protected location.

As for other types of levels, such as wood levels, they may need a little extra protection from the elements. In addition to cleaning after use, it’s important to note that the chemicals in cement can eat away at wood levels. If you plan to work with cement, consider upgrading to a Stabila mason’s level, which is designed specifically for use setting brick, block or stone. If a wood level gets wet, allow it to completely dry out, as this helps prevent warping, swelling and wood separation – all leading causes for measuring inaccuracy.

Freezing temperatures mean it’s time to stock up on cold resistant tools and supplies. Using air tools and compressors without proper winter maintenance can result in undue wear, tear and deterioration. Before firing up your air tools in the bitter cold, take a look at Nail Gun Depot's checklist for cold weather preventative maintenance tips and supplies:

Moisture Reducing Air Tool Oil

Air tools need good lubrication to combat the condensed water that builds up, then freezes, in their system. For sub-zero temperatures, Paslode 219090 cold weather air tool oil is formulated with anti-freeze, which keeps your air tool running efficiently in temperatures of 32 degrees and below. Another great option, the Senco PC1295 moisture shield air tool oil protects your pneumatic tool in cold, damp conditions.

Cold Resistant Air Hoses

An air tool is nothing without its air hose, and for use in cold weather conditions, you'll need a hose that's resistant to freezing temperatures. Consider hoses that remain flexible in a wide range of temperature. Hoses made from rubber are generally the top recommended option for cold weather, but are sometimes not preferable due to the heavier weight of rubber. To avoid the additional weight of rubber, hybrid air hoses are becoming a popular contender for low temperature use. A hybrid blend of polyurethane, rubber and PVC offers decent cold weather resistance, without the bulkiness of rubber. Hybrid options, such as the RolAir NOODLE hose, offer a reduced weight design that remains flexible in temperatures as low as -40 degrees.

Low Temperature Fuel Cells

Being prepared with the right fuel cells can make the difference between getting your job done or postponing it. Fuel cells that aren’t rated for the extreme cold will freeze up. If running a Paslode cordless framer, CF325 orange framing fuel (816008) works in all seasons, between 18 and 120 degrees Fahrenheit. It also eliminates the need for additional warming or pumping up, making it extremely easy to insert and run.

**Pro Tip: Keep one fuel cell warm, and one in the tool to use. After 4 to 5 strips of nails, put the warm fuel cell into your tool and keep the previous one warm to avoid freeze-ups.

Pneumatic tools are especially prone to winter weather problems, such as internal moisture build-up, frozen fuel cells and stiff air hoses.

Keeping with the idea that cordless nailers work where pneumatic models won't, battery-only tools require nothing extra to run in the cold. Truly the best solution to running a nailer during winter, consider battery-only cordless tools. For projects in upholstery, woodworking and more - if you're using a staple gun - loading the magazine with staples is the first step, before real work can begin. Depending on the manufacturer and model of your tool, it may require loading staples into the magazine from the top, or the bottom. As always, consult your owner's manual first, for exact step-by-step instruction. However, for most air-powered and electric staple guns, the following tips demonstrate how to load both top and bottom feed staplers.

One of the easiest ways to identify top, versus bottom loading staple guns, is by determining the type of staple gun.

Bottom loading magazines can be found on the majority of cordless staple guns, as well as most fine wire and upholstery staplers. On the other hand, top loading staple gun magazines have been in use much longer than bottom load, and are still predominantly found on large-body, medium and heavy wire pneumatic staplers.

**Pro Tip: If you don’t know whether your staple gun is top or bottom loading, look at the staple exit point on the tool. Then, find the release button. The magazine feed release is usually located on the opposite side of where the staples are fired.

There’s also a general pattern between staple gauge (thickness), and magazine loading type. In terms of light wire staples, 20 gauge, 22 gauge and other similar thicknesses are typically used with bottom load staple feeds, whereas 16 gauge, 18 gauge and larger wire staples are mostly used with top loading systems.

When it comes to loading staples, top loading is generally the slower of the two processes. Bottom loading is faster and more convenient in most instances, except when the tool is being used with a mount, such as when used in high-volume production work. During loading, bottom feed systems require the stapler to be turned upside down, which prevents the staples from falling out.

The differences between top loading and bottom loading staple guns are minimal, but important for problem-free operation. Check out the following step by step images demonstrating how to load both top - and bottom - feed staple gun magazines.

When you think Grex Power Tools, your first thought is probably a 23 gauge micro pinner - or even an 18 gauge brad nailer. Grex wants to change your thinking, as the brand recently introduced its all-new H850LX 21 gauge micro brad nailer, the first of its kind to wear a green Grex badge.

At first glance, you can hardly tell the difference between the H850LX and its 23 gauge cousin, the P650LX. A closer look at the Grex 21 gauge pin nailer however, reveals a much different story.

Drawing on more than 16 years' engineering excellence, the Grex H850LX offers a perfect compromise between nail diameter (represented by visual penetration marks on the wood surface), and holding strength (represented by pin length and width). While 18 gauge brad nails offer improved holding power, they tend to leave larger holes and markings wherever the nail is applied. On the other hand, a 23 gauge pin leaves a smaller blemish on the wood surface, but compensates with a smaller nail diameter - which reduces holding strength.

This leaves you with 21 gauge pins (also referred to as micro brads), which sit right in the middle. Micro brads provide better holding power than 23 gauge micro pins, but leave a less noticeable mark after each drive, as compared to 18 gauge brad nails. Compare the Grex H850LX to other popular 21 gauge nailers, including the Everwin PT850EA, the Senco FinishPro 21LXP and the Cadex V2/21.55.

When it comes to features, the Grex H850LX will not disappoint. Standard features on the H850LX include internal aluminum parts, one-piece driver design with tapered tip (for minimal marking), auto trigger lockout, one-touch lock-out over-ride, on-board integrated edge guide with holder, extruded aluminum magazine, narrow nose design, removable no-mar rubber tip, Posit-Lock nose cover (to reduce jamming), steel belt hook, rear exhaust, large fastener indicator window, allen key storage, swivel air coupler, and rubber hand grip. Weighing in at 3.6 lbs., the H850LX is capable of driving 3/8" to 2" 21 gauge slight headed micro brads, such as Senco ZX Series pins. Versatile and efficient, first impressions indicate Grex has hit one out of the park with their H850LX.

Priced at the top of its competition, just under $300 at launch, it's too soon to tell if the additional expense will be justified in improved build quality, durability and features. But, based on our experience with Grex 23 gauge nailers, we're confident this tool will be successful among the woodworking crowd.

Each A5 framing nailer also comes with a 1/4" air inlet, while sharing the same cylinder valve drive system that put Hitachi framing guns on the map in the 1980's.

Keep reading to take a closer look at each tool.

We start with the Hitachi NV83A5, Hitachi's latest take on the coil framing nailer. Bringing forth a strong sense of nostalgia, the NV83A5 shares many of the same aesthetics and components made popular by the original Hitachi NV83A. Capable of driving 2" to 3-1/4" full head wire collated coil nails, the NV83A5 features a tool-free depth of drive adjustment, selective actuation trigger for bump or sequential fire, rapid response cylinder valve drive system, side load pop-out magazine, open nose design, plastic shield, rubber grip, and rafter hook. A hardened claw tip resists wear, and grips more for driving nails at different angles.

New and improved features for the NV83A5 include an easier to maintain design, interchangeable parts with the original NV83 tool, less parts in the trigger (eliminating composite parts altogether), and the addition of a rafter hook. Relying on the same cylinder valve drive system as the original NV83A, the NV83A5 offers both rapid response - paired with serious power. Light enough to hold in one hand during use, this Hitachi coil nailer is excellent for a variety of high production tasks in framing, sheathing, decking, sub-flooring and pallet assembly. The NV83A5 is a direct replacement for the NV83A4 and its predecessors.

On the other hand, the Hitachi NR83AA5 drives clipped head paper tape nails from 2" to 3-1/4" in length, and offset round head paper strip nails from 2" to 3-1/4" in length. Despite the difference in nail collation, many of the NR83AA5's underpinnings are shared between the other A5 framing nailers. Lightweight and well-balanced, this Hitachi framing nailer is not only easy to maneuver, but capable of driving into the toughest materials. The NR83AA5 shares Hitachi's cylinder valve drive system, offering rapid response firing - paired with sufficient driving power for quick and consistent sinking. Standard features on the NR83AA5 include a selective action trigger, to switch between contact and sequential operation, as well as a rear loading aluminum magazine, open nose design, hardened claw tip (to reduce wear and drive nails at different angles), rafter hook, tool-free depth adjustment, and a comfortable rubber grip.

With selective actuation now located on the trigger, just as with the NV83A5, Hitachi not only reduced the total number of parts in the trigger, but also eliminated all composite parts. The Hitachi NR83AA5 is intended for applications ranging from framing to sheathing, truss building, sub-flooring, decking, fencing, pallet building and more. The Hitachi NR83AA5 replaces all previous generation NR83AA tools, including the NR83AA3 and NR83AA4.

And last, but certainly not least, we have the NR83A5 and NR83A5(S).

Taking the refreshed NR83A5 plastic strip framing nailer back to its roots, Hitachi re-employed first generation components and mechanics. The NR83A5 round head framing nailer drives plastic collated strip nails from 2" to 3-1/4" in length, and also features selective actuation on its trigger. With a selective action trigger to easily switch between contact and sequential operation, the Hitachi NR83A5 also comes with a two-piece steel magazine, tool-free adjustable depth of drive, comfort rubber grip, hardened claw tip (for driving nails at different angles), and an open nose design for easy jam removal. Featuring a top load magazine, the NR83A5 also comes with a rafter hook and safety glasses; and is positioned as a direct replacement for the NR83A, NR83A2, and NR83A3.

Almost identical to the NR83A5, the Hitachi NR83A5(S) offers all of the same features (as the NR83A5), with the exception of depth adjustment. That's right, the NR83A5(S) does not come with adjustable depth, but is otherwise identical to its counterpart, the NR83A5.

Our take, if you don't need depth of drive adjustment, we'd suggest saving a few bucks and considering the A5(S).

All four nailers are expected to launch early September 2017, and should be readily available to ship within the month.

This leaves us with one last question. Which one would you choose?

Light-years ahead of the old Impulse tools from the 1990's, cordless nailing is now one of the hottest topics in construction. Efficiency concern - and in some cases questionable reliability - has kept many contractors from making the switch from air-power to battery-power, until now. Using Hitachi Power Tools' all-new 18 volt brushless motor and Air Spring Drive System, both of these cordless nailers eliminate the need for air hose and air compressor. And, while the same can be said about comparable contenders from Paslode and Dewalt, Hitachi's lithium ion system also eliminates the use of gas fuel cartridges - a benefit not currently available with Paslode cordless nailers.

Built from the underpinnings of Hitachi's high-quality pneumatic nail guns, the Hitachi 18V framing nailer is designed to handle like an air nailer, yet capable of delivering more than enough power to flush drive 3-1/2" framing nails with ease. This, in part, is thanks to Hitachi’s Air Spring Drive System, which uses permanently sealed compressed air to drive each nail - resulting in zero ramp up time, and driving speeds up to 2 nails per second. The list of standard features on each Hitachi NR1890 cordless framing nailer includes a tool-free depth of drive adjustment, selective actuation button, on-tool battery indicator, integrated pivoting rafter hook, and a side lock switch to prevent accidental firing.

Powered by Hitachi's BSL1830C compact 3.0Ah battery, these cordless framing nailers can drive up to 400 nails per charge. Each NR1890 nailer comes with a lifetime manufacturer's warranty on the tool itself, as well as Hitachi's 2-year battery guarantee, and 1-year warranty on the charger. In addition to the tool, you'll find a BSL1830C Li-Ion battery (339782), UC18YFSL fast charger, contractor bag and safety glasses in the box.

So, how does the Hitachi NR1890 really stack up against its competition?

For the sake of fairness, we can't really compare the NR1890DR to Paslode or Dewalt, since neither brand offers a cordless plastic strip framing nailer currently.

However, when it comes to paper tape nailers, the Hitachi NR1890DC can definitely hold its own against the Paslode CF325XP (905600), and the Dewalt DCN692M1. Hitachi's instant advantage over Paslode, the NR1890DC requires no compressed gas fuel for operation - meaning the end user can operate independently of costly fuel cells; and without the need for compressed gas, there's no delay in firing due to ramp up. A huge benefit for productivity and efficiency.

When we tested the Hitachi, we immediately noticed two things: the nailer is extremely fast - even compared to the Dewalt DCN692 - but can feel a little cumbersome after an extended period of time.

The biggest disadvantage to the Hitachi is its weight, which weighing in at 10 pounds with battery, is a pound heavier than the Dewalt DCN692, and three pounds heavier than the Paslode CF325XP. While a slightly heavier tool may pose issue to some, we're confident improved productivity and efficiency will more than make up for weight related concerns in the big scheme of things.

When it comes to long-term build quality, we haven't had enough time with the Hitachi NR1890 to make any concrete claims, but with a lifetime manufacturer's warranty on the tool itself (excludes battery), neither Paslode nor Dewalt come close in comparison.

Expanding on an already impressive line of cordless tools, Dewalt, in partnership with Powers Fastening, recently introduced the DCN890 cordless concrete and steel pinner. Among the first battery-only cordless concrete nailers available to contractors, the DCN890 is able to handle an array of projects, including applications in mechanical, electrical, plumbing, drywall, insulation, surface prep and more. Versatile, easily serviceable in the field, and built for contractor-grade performance, here's your first look at the all-new Dewalt DCN890 cordless concrete nailer.

As with all other Dewalt cordless nailers, the DCN890 is available in two variations - either as a complete kit with (2) DCB205 batteries, DCB115 charger, DCN8904 standard/drywall interchangeable contact trip, and storage case (DCN890P2); or as a bare tool only, without kit (DCN890B).

This 20V lithium ion cordless concrete nailer isn't afraid to take on both large and small projects alike, designed to drive concrete pins from 1/2" all the way up to 2-1/4" in length.

What makes the DCN890 important isn't the fact it's cordless, but rather how it's powered. Removing fuel cells and powder loads from the equation, Dewalt's cordless concrete nailer runs exclusively on 20V MAX lithium ion battery power. Not only is the DCN890 safer to operate thanks to a propellant-free design, it also provides long-term cost efficiency - eliminating recurring expense for powder loads or gas fuel. When used with DCB205 5.0Ah battery, Dewalt indicates this tool is capable of firing up to 600 shots per charging cycle.

Featuring a flywheel based design for internal operation, reset time between shots is minimal, allowing for improved overall performance. Thanks to flywheel operation, Dewalt is also able to offer some of the lowest noise and recoil levels among its competition. And, with a propellant-free design, no licensing is required.

The other major benefit to Dewalt's new DCN890P2 and DCN890B, among its competition, it is the only cordless concrete nailer with a field-serviceable driver blade. Easy to service on-the-go, Dewalt says the driver can be replaced by a user in under two minutes. Specifically designed to accommodate several different applications in concrete and steel fastening, three adjustable power settings allow the DCN890 to handle projects ranging from hollow block, to hard concrete and steel.

Other features on this Dewalt battery-powered concrete nailer include a driver stall release lever, brushless motor, tool-free access points to clear jams, and an angled magazine for access in tight areas. Meanwhile, dual built-in LED lights illuminate any work surface, while providing valuable tool diagnostics to the user. And best of all, backed by a 3-Year Dewalt Guaranteed Tough warranty, any lingering concern about quality should be put to bed.

Ready to accessorize? The DCN890 can also be mounted on Dewalt's DCN8905 extension pole, which can be used either as a 3' or 6' extension in hard to reach places. Owners will also have the option to order Stick-E and Magentic Stick-E nosepieces for the cordless concrete and steel pinner. And of course, the DCN890 is also compatible with Dewalt's new FLEXVOLT battery too.

Commercial applications for the DCN890 include attaching steel track to concrete, block or steel; attaching mechanical clips and fixing to concrete, block or steel; attaching plywood to concrete or block; attaching lath to concrete, block or steel; or attaching furring strips to concrete or block. Suitable base materials for fastening include normal-weight concrete, lightweight concrete, grouted concrete masonry, hollow concrete masonry, and steel.

Ready to order? Initial reports estimate the DCN890 kit will be available as early as October 2017, while we expect the bare tool to follow shortly after. Launch pricing on Nail Gun Depot is set at $749 for the kit, while the bare tool can be had for just under $600.

Recently receiving a Pro Tool Innovation Award (PTIA) for their FCN90L coil framing nailer, Everwin Pneumatic has quickly earned industry recognition for their cost-efficient, high-quality air nailers and staplers. Among several recent additions to the Everwin product lineup, the PT850EA (21 gauge pinner) and P650EA (23 gauge micro pinner) each stand to rattle cages for established competitors at Grex, Cadex and Senco.

But, will the woodworking community simply put down their tried and tested tools, and take a gamble on Everwin? Let's examine why woodworkers should consider it.

Just like Senco's FinishPro 21LXP, the Everwin is plenty capable of driving 21 gauge micro brads from 5/8" to 2" in length - without splitting or requiring touch up work. And, like the NEW Grex H850LX, the PT850EA features a last nail lockout with override, as well as a comfort grip handle, narrow nose and no-mar tip. Other features from Everwin include automatic pin length adjustment, side load magazine, a double safety trigger, rear exhaust with built-in muffler, pin reload indicator and reversible belt hook. With easy access bolts and wrench included, Everwin has designed this tool for easy jam clearance and depth adjustment.

For projects that require a more delicate touch, we turn to the Everwin P650EA 23 gauge micro pinner. Range matching the Cadex CPB23.50, Grex P650L, and Senco FinishPro 23LXP, Everwin's 23 gauge pin nailer runs headless pins from 1/2" to 2" in length. Like the Everwin 21 gauge nailer, the P650EA features a last nail lockout with override system, to prevent dry fires and driver marks on the work piece. Now, considering the specs and features, is Everwin worth the gamble?

Most brand-loyal woodworkers will no doubt stick to their guns, but for those who need a well-built, budget-friendly pin nailer, we'd suggest Everwin. As Everwin continues to claim new territory with their expanding lineup of collated fastening products, we can almost certainly expect to see continued growth in quality and performance.
